new Myspace and Facebook profiles! |
(1/27/2008) |
TransCentralPA has recently opened a
MySpace profile, a
Facebook profile, and a
Facebook group. We did this to help spread the word
about our group and ensure we register our name before someone
else does. If you participate in either of these two
social networks, feel free to add us! |

Read a Good
Book Lately? Seen a Great Documentary? |
(1/27/2008) |
TransCentralPA
recently purchased a lockable, vertical metal storage
cabinet to store our currently 'Spartan' resource materials.
We're asking everyone to please consider donating (remember,
it's tax deductible!!) any Transgendered materials
such as books, videos, articles, etc. We'll compile
and list them on our website under
Members' Library and make
them available to others.
Those
old items still have plenty of usefulness in them.
Make the difference, help someone else out!

Equality
Advocates spoke at our January Meeting |
(1/15/2008) |
|
Jake Kaskey from Pennsylvania
Equality Advocates spoke at our January 5th Membership
Meeting. Mr. Kaskey outlined some of the services that
Equality Advocates provides for the Transgendered Community.
He also addressed the failings of the HRC and the EDNA
debacle. Mr. Kaskey made a plea for help in passing
pending state legislation that would provide for
Transgendered anti-discrimination laws. These current
bills are HB1400 in the House and SB 761 in the Senate.
If you are interested in helping this cause, Equality
Advocates has provide us written directions on how to meet
with our representatives, a Talking Points sheet about the
importance of this legislation, and a form letter
addressed to your specific representative. If you fill
out the letter, please send it to Equality Advocates rather
than directly to your representatives. Equality
Advocates feels that it is more important to hand the
representative a stack of several letters rather than send
them one-by-one.

New
Jersey Legislature Passes Gender Identity/Expression Hate Crime
and School Anti-Bulllying Law |
(1/15/2008) |
|
As of January 7th, The New Jersey
General Assembly passed A4591/S2975 by a large majority of
65-10. This follows action last week in the state Senate where
the bill passed unanimously 35-0. The law that passed will now
go to Governor Corzine's desk for his expected signature.
NCTE congratulates our wonderful allies at Garden State Equality
and Gender Rights Advocacy Association of New Jersey (GRAANJ)
who have continued to represent transgendered people in New Jersey
with Incredible skill and determination. Basically, the
bill adds gender identity and expression to the state's hate
crime law and gives teeth to New Jersey's safe school,
anti-bullying laws. According to Garden State Equality
specifically, "the new law does the following:
1. Adds 'gender identity or
expression' as a protected class to the state hate crimes law.
2. Updates other parts of the hate crimes law by adding
'national origin' as a protected category, which thus far has
been included in the law by interpreting 'ethnicity' to include
such; and substitutes the more sensitive term 'disability' for
'handicap.'
3. Specifies that a 'mistake of fact' by a defendant committing
a hate crime is not a defense.
4. Requires two hours of hate-crimes sensitivity training for
all new police officers.
5. Specifies suggested sentencing options to which judges can
sentence defendants, such as anti-hate sensitivity training.
6. Creates a study Commission on Bullying in Schools, which has
nine months to investigate the problem and make recommendations
to the Governor and legislature for further legislation.
7. Requires schools post their anti-bullying policies on their
websites, and to distribute their anti-bullying policies, within
120 days after enactment of the law."
